The first time that the 61 Mech Veterans Association took part

This year was the first time that the 61 Mech Veterans Association took part in the annual Border Boys Parade that was hosted by the Casa Mia shellhole at GEM Village in Irene.

It was a very special occasion where we remembered all of those young men who will not grow old with us after paying the highest price for their country.

Thought provoking speech by general Jannie Geldenhuys

General Jannie Geldenhuys addressed the parade and spectators with a thought provoking speech in which he confirmed that if it was not for the Border war, we might have enjoyed a total different type of democracy in South Africa today.

The SADF was part of the hot war of the Cold war and those soldiers who took part in the Bush war, made a valuable contribution to make possible the democratic Namibia and South Africa in which we live today, while fighting against all odds.

Nine veterans presented the 61 Mech Veterans Association

The nine veterans that presented the 61 Mech Veterans Association at the Border Boys Parade were Derek Walker, Mike Beyl, Deon Joubert, Henri Boshoff, Gert Minnaar, Douw Venter, Kowie Steyn, Jaap Steyn and Jan Malan.

Next year’s Border Boys Parade

Next year we want to involve even more of the 61 Mech veterans with the Border Boys Parade, and we look forward to your participation.

By that time we should also have settled our official 61 Mech Veterans dress for this type of parade, and hopefully our veterans will then be able to parade in the blazer, pants and berets that will be uniquely associated with our veterans association.
